A Survey on Self Regulation Behavior of Diabetic Patients performing SMBG

Abstract

Background:
@EN Today the number of diabetic patients performing SMBG ar increasing in Korea Current SMBG education seems to be inadequate in point of patient's utilization of SMBG data. This study was designed to investigate the self regulation behavior
(self
monitoring-self evaluation-self response) of diabetic patients in their home and to raise the necessity of systematic SMBG education in Korea.
@ES Methods:
@EN 75 diabetic patients performing SMBG were participated. Data were collected by self report questionnaire and chart review.
@ES Results:
@EN 1) In self monitoring 45.3% of patients reported that they measured blood glucose one to four times per week. 72% record blood glucose levels in log books everytime they test.
2) In evaluation of SMBG data (self evaluation) 54.4% had ideal goal of FBS (≤115 ㎎/dl) and 29.7% had target goal of FBS(116 135㎎/dl). 33.3% had ideal goal of PP2 (≤140㎎/dl) and 22.2% had target goal of PP2 (141~160㎎/dl).
56% always reasoned the cause when they were in hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia and 36% mostly did.
3) In utilization of SMBG data (self response to hyperglycemia) 41.9% always changed in diet and 32.4% mostly did. 28.4% always changed in exercise and 28.4% mostly did. 62.7% didn't adjust drug dose at all.
44.0% always reviewed SMBG record with their doctro.
4) Frequency of SMBG was not significantly correlated with FBS, PP2.
5) Self regulation behavior was not significantly correlated with FBS, but significantly correlated with PP2 (r=-0.2789, p<0.05).
@ES Conclusion:
@EN SMBG can be associated with improvements in blood glucose control only if patients evaluate SMBG data and then utilize the data for their diabetic menagement following SMBG. So health care team should give systematic SBMG education to
diabetic
patients for their self regulation behavior.
